After hearing that the famine in Israel has ended, Naomi decides to return to her homeland. She urges her Moabite daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, to remain in Moab and find new husbands. While Orpah ultimately chooses to stay, Ruth defiantly declares her loyalty to Naomi, stating, "Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God."
Upon returning to Bethlehem, Naomi and Ruth find themselves in a dire situation, having no means of support. To provide for them, Ruth gleans in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy landowner who is a relative of Naomi's deceased husband. Boaz notices Ruth's hard work and dedication, and he treats her with kindness, ensuring she is protected while she gathers grain. Naomi recognizes Boaz's interest in Ruth and encourages her to approach him to seek a more secure future.
In a courageous act, Ruth goes to Boaz at night, uncovering his feet and asking him to spread his cloak over her as a symbol of protection and commitment, which indicates her desire for marriage.
