The editor of the compilation titled "Made in the Trenches" presents these poignant insights:
Corporal Streets, who shared his sonnets several months prior, expressed: "These poems convey my emotions as well as those of countless others who, like me, are on the brink of leaving England."
In a subsequent correspondence regarding additional poems, Cpl. Streets remarked: "These verses were inspired during my time in the trenches. I've been so preoccupied that I haven't had much opportunity to refine them. They aim to reflect the thoughts that may occupy a man's mind in his final moments. I may not witness the completion of these writings, yet I remain hopeful. As soldiers, we possess perspectives on life that we wish to articulate, even as the sound of death surrounds us. We strive to communicate our sentiments from this immense struggle to those who remember us, and sometimes, sadly, mourn our absence. We want to convey that amid our deepest sorrow for the vibrancy of life we leave behind, we confront death with determination, clarity, and courage."
Tragically, he did not survive; he was killed in action on July 1, 1916. - Summary provided by Ruth Golding
